Oklahoma State dominates Colorado with a 57-24 win on Saturday night

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Drew Mestemaker threw for 386 yards and four touchdowns, Sam Keltner matched a program record with five field goals, and Oklahoma State held Colorado to 120 yards of offense in the second half of a 57-24 win on Saturday night.

Caleb Hawkins added 120 yards rushing and Justin Bowick had 138 yards receiving and a score for Oklahoma State (5-2, 3-1 Big 12 Conference), which outscored the Buffaloes 34-0 after halftime.

“I thought offensively we were in rhythm pretty much the whole entire game,” Cowboys coach Eric Morris said. “I thought we were better in the red zone (in the second half). We took a lot of points when we got down there and Sam’s been awesome.”

The five field goals gave Keltner 18 straight, which ties him for the top spot in program history with Matt Ammendola.

Colorado (2-5, 0-4) led 24-23 at halftime on the strength of 222 yards passing and two touchdowns from quarterback Isaac Wilson, who also ran for a score. Mestemaker countered with 264 yards and two touchdowns but Oklahoma State couldn’t finish drives and settled for Keltner field goals of 47, 30 and 41 yards.

The game took a turn on the first play of the third quarter. Wilson fumbled on a keeper and safety Quinton Hammonds recovered the ball on the Colorado 24. Two plays later, Mestemaker threw a 3-yard TD pass to tight end Morgan McPhaul and the Cowboys took the lead for good.

“Great game by OSU. Really, they did some wonderful things,” Colorado coach Deion Sanders said. “This stuff hurts, man. We’re going to try to mask it as much as possible, but this stuff hurts. Eleven penalties, 84 yards, it’s just totally undisciplined. Came out in the second half, were unable to produce points, were unable to stop the opposition. They did some phenomenal things.”

Oklahoma State forced a punt and drove 78 yards for another score to make it 37-24. Hawkins was the catalyst with a 39-yard run and a 17-yard reception.

The takeaway

Colorado: The Buffaloes moved the ball with ease in the first half but punted four times and committed three turnovers after that.

Oklahoma State: The Cowboys made sure homecoming was a success by rolling up 598 yards of offense, including 188 yards rushing, and 28 first downs.

Double trouble

Linebacker Ethan Wesloski and cornerback LaDanian Fields were a big reason Colorado’s offense couldn’t get on track in the second half. Wesloski finished with eight tackles, two sacks, two tackles for loss and a quarterback hit. Fields also had eight tackles, two interceptions and one tackle for loss. The Cowboys finished with four sacks and nine tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

Lost in shuffle

The first half proved productive for Wilson, who had all but 58 of his 280 yards passing. Receivers Joseph Williams and DeAndre Moore accounted for 241 of those yards. Williams finished with nine catches and 135 yards, but had only one catch for five yards in the second half. Moore, who finished with five catches for 106 yards, had just one catch for 29 yards after the break.
